Narrabeen Bait and Tackle

Fishing Report – 15 May 2025

Beach and Rock

At the time of writing, the swell is quiet large making beach fishing fairly difficult. At these times, try and find a sheltered area at the end of the beach or a deep inshore gutter that can still be fished in a big swell.

Earlier in the week we had reports for some nice whiting being captured on Dee Why Beach using beach worms. Fish were not in great numbers but up to 43cm in length.

Salmon, Tailor and bream were reported at North Narrabeen with a nice deep gutter near the entrance and along to “The Pines”. These have been taken early morning and late afternoon using pilchards for bait.

Both Whale Beach and Palm Beach produced some large surf bream using both beach worms and Hawkesbury prawns.

We had a report of big jewfish, estimated to be 20kg plus, taken off the beach near South Narrabeen surf club using green eyed squid. There are also several small sharks around taking baits intended for jewies.

Blackfish are in good numbers off the rocks with some good hauls being taken at North Narrabeen pool area. Trevally and bream have also been taken on platform at Warriewood and South Curl Curl which has also produced some kings and snapper.

Narrabeen Lake

The lake has a shallow entrance which has lowered the levels throughout the lake.

Flathead have been reported in good numbers up the back of the lake near the sports camp, Pipe Clay Point and Jamieson Park areas using both soft plastics, Hawkesbury prawns, and half WA Pilchards.

There are a large number of mullet in the lake at the moment and it is no surprise to hear that live mullet baits are accounting for some large jewfish around the Pittwater Road bridge and in the Wimbledon Ave area.

There are plenty of long toms in the lake casing havoc on light gear.

Offshore

Newport Reef in close has seen a few kings landed on green-eyed squid and live yakkas.

Most of the action has been on the wider grounds with good sized snapper at Broken Bay wide and Esmerelda.

Pittwater and Sydney Harbour

Kingfish are in good numbers in the Harbour around Sugarloaf in Middle Harbour and west of the Harbour bridge around Lavender Bay. Fresh squid and metal jigs such as the Palms Slow blat are best options.

Luderick are also in good numbers from harbour rock platforms and ferry wharfs.

In Pittwater, the kings have been busting up at first light around Mackerel Beach. One of our regular customers has been catching some large snapper off his kayak on the western side of Morning Bay. Plenty of burley was used to get them biting.

Nice southern calamari Squid are around West Head in close and Lovett Bay. They make great bait and are also excellent eating fish – the dilemma if you catch one.

Trevally to 50cm are around Church Point and respond well to a bread biased burley mix.
