Rocks
Some big drummer have been caught off the rocks at Mona Vale pool, Newport and Collaroy headland. Use fresh peeled prawns for best results and hang on – these brutes fight hard !
Some good-sized Kingfish have come from the rocks at Freshwater and Warriewood Headlands with fresh green-eyed squid or stick baits accounting for the better fish.
As always, be extremely careful when rock fishing and have all of the appropriate safety gear and an exit plan should you get washed in. No fish is worth your life!
Beaches
As the spring water temperatures start to rise, the beaches will start to see the summer species return. The whiting have made an early appearance this year with some decent fish being caught at Nth Narrabeen, Collaroy and Dee Why. Freshwater and Queenscliff also have whiting and bream biting at them moment. The best bait being beach worms.
North Narrabeen has also produced some metre plus jewfish with local angler Dennis scoring another 116mm fish using fresh squid for bait.
With the full moon on 27 September, it’s a great time to target jewfish a few days either side of the full moon. Green-eyed squid or large fresh strips of mullet or tuna are the best baits.
Narrabeen Lake
As the weather and water temperatures rise, flathead will become more prevalent in the lake and we are seeing that already with some very good reports of flathead from the Jamieson Park area as well as the Pittwater Road bridges.
There have been some flounder taken along the weed beds adjacent to Wakehurst Parkway and trevally down around the Ocean St bridge area. Best baits are peeled prawns and beach worms.
Offshore
The ocean water temp is still holding around 18-19 degrees. (18.7 today)
Some good sized snapper have been caught at Broken Bay Wide, Esmarelda and Long Reef in close. Best baits are fresh squid or large strip baits of tuna or mullet. A good berley trail is important when targeting snapper.
The 40-50 metre drifts off Mona Vale and Palm Beach are holding plenty of good sized flathead.
Trolling around Barrenjoey, Mona Vale and Newport Reef is producing kingfish and also reports of Mac tuna.
Our friends at Marine Rescue had a busy weekend last weekend attending to many boats that hadn’t been out for a while and were not well maintained.
It’s a good time to get your boat and trailer serviced and check all of your safety gear.
Pittwater
Schools of salmon are hanging around West Head, Flint and Steel, and The Basin. Fish are good sized and are up to 60-70cm sized so great fun on light spin gear. They are best targeted using small metal lures cast downwind. Always cast to the side of the school rather than into the middle.
There are flathead on the drift between Barrenjoey and Palm Beach with pilchard and mullet strip baits being the best bait.
Flint and Steel has produced some nice jewfish caught on fresh squid baits.
