Rocks

There have been some great reports from our local rock fishermen this week.

There are plenty of blackfish and drummer being caught on most ledges with bag limits very easily reached. Trevally are also in good numbers with the odd snapper being taken as well.

As always, be extremely careful when rock fishing and have all of the appropriate safety gear and an exit plan should you get washed in. No fish is worth your life!

Beaches

Again this week we have had reports of winter whiting being taken on our larger open beaches with some extra-large fish being caught. Try the gutters at mid Curl Curl or Long Reef -Dee Why on live or quality preserved worms. There were also some good silver bream and trevally taken at Collaroy during the week.

Tailor and salmon are around on the bigger open beaches best targeted at dusk and dawn, and into the evening using pilchards or fresh mullet strips.

For those who put in the time to get fresh bait, put in the big hours, and fish the optimal tides, the rewards of some large mulloways have come their way. Fresh green-eyed squid or live mullet baits have accounted for some quality fish. An unwanted by-catch is a plethora of whaler sharks and small bull sharks.

Narrabeen Lake

The lake is still fishing well with the usual flathead and bream being the main fish being caught. Fresh Hawkesbury prawns and soft plastics are the best options at the moment. There are also some large jewfish being captured at night on live herring and fresh green-eyed squid.

Try the road bridges on Pittwater Road at dusk or early morning for bream and flathead. Flathead, luderick and bream are available near the caravan park at Ocean St.

Jamieson Park has also been producing some good flathead and bream on prawns and soft plastics.

Offshore

The water temp is still around 21 degrees and forecast to drop by one or two degrees in the next ten days. The offshore fishing has been great with a mixture of summer and winter species on offer during this crossover period.

Some quality snapper in the 3kg range have been taken in good numbers at Esmerelda and Broken Bay wide. Fresh squid fished into a berley trail has accounted for the better fish. There are also some big schools of large tailor hanging around the wider reefs. We have also had reports of good numbers of Teraglin both inshore and wide.

Boltons and Reggies have good numbers of tarwhine, trevally and large tailor – cut baits of mullet and bonito are working well.

Inshore reefs such as Newport and Long Reeg are holding smaller snapper and kingfish.

Pittwater

The wreck at Clareville and the Kingfish highway have seen some action this week with some large kingfish being reported. These have all been taken of fresh squid trolled on a downrigger.

There are large schools of smaller mac tuna throughout Pittwater mostly up near West Head and Barrenjoey Headland. These are great fun on light spin gear and they make great snapper baits.

Some excellent fathead and flounder have been caught on the drift between Palm Beach and Mackerel Beach and around the channel markers at Palm Beach. Both fish baits and vibes like the 85mm Samiki Vibe-licious will get you a feed.

During the week, the McCarr’s Creek area has produced some quality bream using extra light gear and peeled Hawkesbury prawns.
