Rocks
The rock fishing scene has been very good in the past week. Luderick and Drummer are in good numbers on most of our local ledges with bag limits fairly easily achieved on both species. Try Warriewood headland, Long Reef and Whale Beach using prawn baits fished in a good bread-based berley trail for Drummer.
Both cabbage and string weed will get you a feed of luderick. Try the pool at Bilgola beach, Warriewood headland, and Turrimetta rocks.
There are few quality snapper being caught off the rocks. A fresh squid or bonito bait and a long cast will give you a good chance of catching a few.
Salmon, bonito and trevally are being taken at Curl Curl along with the odd kingfish decent sized kingfish.
As always, be extremely careful when rock fishing and have all of the appropriate safety gear and an exit plan should you get washed in. No fish is worth your life!
Beaches
Some good reports from the beaches over the past few weeks especially for those chasing mulloway (jewfish). We have had numerous reports of mulloway captures with some anglers getting a couple each night on consecutive evenings. Fresh squid baits have accounted for the majoring of the fish. We have also had reports of jewfish being caught on metal spinners by guys targeting tailor so they are obviously there in good numbers and open to a wide range of baits and lures.
Salmon are still in good numbers with large schools working their way along the coast. At an average size of 65cm, they make for great action on light surf gear and for those who enjoy eating them, a great feed. Best baits are pilchards or try using a 40-60 gram metal spinners on a medium to fast retrieve with the odd pause.
Big Bream are still in reasonable numbers in close in the corners at Bilgola and Avalon using prawns and tuna strip baits. The southern end of Newport Beach has also produced some good bream.
Still reports of a few winter whiting being caught. Try the gutters at Curl Curl or Dee Why on live or quality preserved worms.
Narrabeen Lake
The lake is fishing well with plenty of small bream throughout the lake. Some bigger sized bream have been caught towards the Ocean St bridge using peeled prawns for bait.
Further up the lake near Berry Reserve and Jamieson Park some good sized flathead are being caught using half pilchard baits or Bait Junkie 3’’ prawns in Nipper UV being one of their favourites.
Some quality luderick have also made the lake home for winter with fish in the 35-40cm bracket being caught during the week.
Offshore
The ocean water temp is around 18 degrees. The offshore fishing has picked up with yellowfin tuna starting to show up around Brown Mountain. Most fish are being caught on the troll.
Snapper are being caught on the local reefs with some decent sized fish being caught. Try the inshore reefs like Newport Reef and Long Reef in close at the wall and white rock. Use plenty of berley – most of our successful snapper fishos are using the large berley bombs. There are some extra-large slimeys being attracted to the berley and these will grab your bait on the way to the bottom.
Kingfish are also in good numbers on the closer reefs with some metre plus fish reported during the week. Newport Reef in the 15-20m mark has seen a few decent kings all caught on fresh green-eyed squid.
The 40m mark drift off Mona Vale has produced some good catches of flathead.
Large schools of salmon are hanging around the headlands and closer reefs and are plentiful around the Manly- Rose Bay section of Sydney Harbour at the moment. The harbour is full of small bait fish at present so lot’s or predators (salmon, Tailor and Kings ) about chasing the schools of bait schools.
Pittwater
There are plenty of blue swimmer crabs in Pittwater so a good time to get your crab traps out and get a delicious feed of crabs.
Salmon are also in good numbers throughout Pittwater – look for the birds working the bust ups.
Trevally are still available and are great fun for the kids. Lightly weighed rigs and plenty of bread/pellet-based berley will get them on the bite. Try around Woody Head, Long Nose Point and West Head.
Flint and Steel has also produced some large flathead and jewfish on live mullet.
Bayview and the McCarr’s Creek area has produced some nice bream and trevally during the week using extra light gear and peeled Hawkesbury prawns.
