Rocks

Some good reports this week from Dee Why Headland, Queenscliff, and North Narrabeen of good-sized bream, trevally, and drummer. Plenty of berley is required to get the fish biting. Best bait is a large, peeled prawn fished under a small float.

South Avalon around the rock pool has produced some large drummer again using peeled prawns and a good bread-based berley.

As always, be extremely careful when rock fishing and have all of the appropriate safety gear and an exit plan should you get washed in. No fish is worth your life!

Beaches

There have been some good catches of salmon, tailor, dart and whiting off the beaches. Best beaches are Dee Why, Warriewood, and North Narrabeen.

Salmon and tailor are best targeted at dusk and dawn using pilchards or metal spinner.

Whiting and bream are taking beach worms and peeled Hawkesbury prawns. The whiting are feeding in close so no big casts required.

With the New moon on 13 August, it’s a great time to target jewfish a few days either side of the new moon. Green-eyed squid or large fresh strips of mullet or tuna are the best baits. We have already had a report of a 14.5kg jewfish caught at North Narrabeen this week on fresh green-eyed squid so they are definitely about and worth targeting.

Narrabeen Lake

Some decent sized bream have been taken at Octavia St, Berry Reserve and Jamieson Park areas using fresh Hawkesbury prawns and beach worms.

Luderick (blackfish) are showing up near the Ocean St bridge drop-off. Berley with chopped up weed mixed with sand to keep them interested.

Elsewhere in the lake we’ve had reports of flounder taken at Wimbledon Ave and a few trevally.

The lake should start to fire up a bit in the next month or so as the season changes.\

Offshore

The ocean water temp is still holding around 18 degrees.

Snapper are being caught in reasonable numbers on the close reefs such as Boltons, Reggies, and Maitland Reef. There are also some extra-large slimeys which make excellent bait.

There are also reports of big trevally and kingfish both in close and out wide. Fresh green-eyed squid again is accounting for the better fish.

Yellowfin and Bluefin tuna are in reasonable numbers south of Browns Mountain.

Pittwater

Big schools of salmon are hanging around West Head, Flint and Steel, and The Basin. Fish are good sized and are up to 2kg sized so great fun on light spin gear. They are best targeted using small metal lures cast downwind. Always cast to the side of the school rather than into the middle.

There are flathead and flounder on the drift between Barrenjoey and Palm Beach with pilchard and mullet strip baits being the best bait.

We have also had some reports of good-sized kings being caught on the western side of Scotland Island using live baits.

Fishing Maps

We recommend and sell the AFN Fishing maps. These are excellent for those wanting to build their knowledge of each waterway. The maps show which species can be targeted in each area along with drifts and other helpful tips. At just $10 each they are great value.
